Inside my karting camera setup: why I chose Insta360 X4 over the AiM SmartyCam3

The SmartyCam3 that almost was…

When people ask what camera I use on-track, the most obvious answer would’ve been the AiM SmartyCam3—especially since we already run the AiM Mychron system. It plugs right in and delivers a sleek data overlay synced with your racing telemetry.

  • Key specs:

    • Records Full HD (1920×1080) at 30 fps (Sport version) or 60 fps (Corsa/GP).

    • Integrates seamlessly with AiM data systems for lap-by-lap analysis.

    • Weatherproof and powers on/off automatically with the engine.

Downside? It records only forward, and 1080p resolution feels limiting compared to modern 360 options. Plus, pricing starts around $899.

Enter the Insta360 X4: a game-changer

I ultimately went with the Insta360 X4, and here’s why it won me over:

  1. 360° recording in 8K – Capture everything around you and reframe later.

  2. Single-lens mode – Record in traditional POV up to 4K 60fps.

  3. Stellar battery life – Up to 135 minutes at 5.7K.

  4. Creative freedom – Invisible selfie stick and drone-like perspectives.

  5. Price – Starts around $425, significantly less than the SmartyCam3.

GPS overlay: the real challenge

I wanted GPS speed and track overlay—and Insta360 offers two remote accessories:

  • GPS Action Remote – remote start/stop and GPS logging, but many user complaints about speed accuracy.

  • GPS Preview Remote – touchscreen preview, accurate GPS data, and more control.

I chose the GPS Preview Remote.

What’s nice:

  • Comes with a wrist strap and a bar/steering wheel mount.

  • Remote control for power, record start/stop, and live preview.

  • No need to pair with a phone for GPS, avoiding lost data issues.

The key: Turn on the GPS Preview Remote several minutes before recording so it has time to acquire a satellite signal. If you start recording before GPS lock, no GPS data will be captured, even if a signal is picked up later.

New release: Insta360 X5

Since my purchase, Insta360 has released the X5 with some upgrades over the X4:

  • Larger 1-inch sensor for improved low-light performance and image clarity.

  • Higher resolution 360° video with better dynamic range.

  • Enhanced image stabilization for smoother footage.

  • Improved audio capture with upgraded microphone array.

  • More advanced AI reframing tools in the companion app.

  • Price starts at $549.

If you want the very best image quality and can stretch the budget, the X5 may be worth considering.

Why this works on the track

  • You capture every angle with the option to choose later.

  • It’s a better value with modern specs at half the price.

  • GPS overlay works reliably without phone tethering.

  • Remote mounting makes controls accessible in racing conditions.

My mount setup

For mounting, I went with a RAM Mount Claw, RAM Mount Extension Arm, and RAM Mount Threaded Stud.

I chose this setup because:

  • Proven in motorsports – RAM Mounts are widely used in racing and known to hold up under vibration and speed.

  • Strong reviews and reputation – Consistently rated highly by racers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Great value – Competitive pricing for the durability and flexibility you get.

  • Versatility – The claw attaches securely to various surfaces, the extension arm provides adjustable reach and angle, and the threaded stud allows solid camera mounting without extra adapters.

This combination makes it easy to position the camera exactly where I want it, while keeping it secure during karting sessions.
